Is a 2x6 Really 2 by 6? True Dimension Lumber, Explained

Stack of rough sawn Doug fir showing true dimension end grain

Ours is, yes. A 2x4 from the store measures about 1-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches. It was a 2x4 once, before it was dried and planed, and the name stuck around after the wood was gone. Ours is cut true dimension. A 2x6 is two inches by six, and a 6x6 is six by six, unless you ask for something else.

Why it matters

Strength and looks are the first reason. A real 8x8 post looks like a post. Hardware is the second. Brackets and hangers from the store are made for store sizes, so measure before you buy a truckload of them. Simpson makes ties spec’d for rough sawn lumber at true dimension, so ask for those, and for anything they do not make, a local welding shop can build custom plates.

Why it costs more than the big box store

You are getting true dimension local wood, cut to what you actually need, from a mill down the road instead of three states away. And if the job calls for a 7x11, we will cut you a 7x11. Try asking the guy in the orange apron for that.
