What Our Sawmill Can Cut: Lengths, Widths and Sizes

Most of what we cut runs through a Wood-Mizer LT70 that sits out in the yard, run from a control room with a joystick. That mill sets the limits on every order, so here they are in plain numbers.

Length

The mill takes logs from 8 feet up to 32 feet. Eight feet is the shortest log the clamps can hold, so that one is the machine talking, not us. On the long end, we just cut a 6x12 at 33 feet 4 inches. That is past what the mill is built for, and it was a fight to get it done. If your design needs a 30 footer, call before you draw the whole porch around it, because long lengths depend on which logs are in the yard that month.

Width

The mill cuts up to 35 inches wide. The head hangs off one side, which gives a big log somewhere to sit, so logs fatter than that can often still go on. We have milled 48 inch logs. They make us work for it, but they come out.

Thickness and size

The thinnest we like to cut is about 1-3/8 inch off the bed. We are set up for timbers, boards and slabs, not for resawing a beam into paneling. The biggest piece by cross section so far is an 8x14, 29 feet long. Whatever the size, it is true dimension: a 6x6 measures a full six inches each way, so plan your hardware around that.

Output

On a good day the mill puts out a couple thousand board feet. On a bad day, somebody’s "clean" yard tree turns out to have a fence staple in it, and we stop to change a blade. Got a size in mind and want to know if it is doable? Send it with a quote request and we will tell you straight.
