A 2x6 is a real 2x6

Store lumber is named for a size it no longer is. A store 2x6 measures about 1-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches by the time it has been dried and planed. Ours is cut true, so a 2x6 is two inches by six, and a 1x12 is a full inch by twelve. You get more wood in every board and a heavier look.

That matters for hardware. Joist hangers and brackets from the store are made for store sizes. Simpson makes ties spec’d for rough sawn lumber at true dimension, and a local welding shop can build custom plates for anything they do not make.

If your build needs grade-stamped lumber for inspection, tell us up front. Grading through Timber Products Inspection starts around $800 per project. More in the FAQ.

What we cut

1x and 2x

Common sizes run from 1x6s up through 2x8s, and we cut wider. 2x12s in pine are easy. Wide fir is harder to come by, since it takes a big log.

Rough or S4S

Rough sawn is standard. Anything can be surfaced four sides. It costs more and adds a little time.

Green, air dried or kiln dried

Buy it green, let it air dry, or have it kiln dried. Kiln drying 1 inch softwood adds about a week.

Lengths

8 to 12 feet is our sweet spot. Longer is possible depending on the logs in the yard, so ask before you design around it.

Cut to order

Most boards are cut to your list. Our 1x bundles of T&G, S4S and rough sawn are usually in stock, and the surplus piles often have what you need.

Species

Douglas fir for strength and outdoor work, spruce for smooth, clean boards, ponderosa pine for wide and affordable. See the species guide.

What people build with it

Siding and trim, fencing, barn and shed walls, shelving, accent walls and ceilings. For posts, beams and rafters, see timbers and beams. For finished ceilings and walls, see tongue and groove.
